26/3/22: Ras yr Aran Fell Race.
Ras yr Aran only does two types of weather, vile and wonderful. This year’s race was a gorgeous
spring day with lambs aplenty. A light easterly wind cooled runners on the top without obstructing
progress in either direction. Several runners who have done the race before had the shock for the
first time of seeing how far it is from Aran Benllyn to the summit having always been in cloud
before.
On such a day it was fitting that Tim Davies (Mercia) 2009 course record of 1:23:26 should
fall. Daniel Howarth of Matlock AC was ahead by the first checkpoint and kept a comfortable lead
all round to finish in 1:23:03 from Gareth Wyn Hughes (Eryri) 1:26:23 (so also meeting the old
record) behind and Gavin Roberts (Calder Valley) 1:27:51.
The first woman howe was Joanne Henderson in 1:49:20. Exactly a minute behind was Sarah Kleeman and Mel Price of Mercia was
third in 1:55:14. All three were running in the F40 category, so Sian Williams of Hebog picked up
that age/cat prize in 2:05:00. Joel Gomez of Wrexham was M40 winner in 1:35:28. Ifan Oldfield in
behind him was 6th overall and the Men <23 winner in 1:37:59. M50 winner was Eryri’s Martin
Cliffe in 1:39:41 with teammate Jenny Hemming picking up the F50 in 2:06:53. Russel Owen of
Eryri was M60 winner in 1:52:55 and Denbigh’s Menai Baugh was women’s winner in 2:41:19 Dei
Jones and Maggie Oliver completed a good trip south for Eryri by picking up the over 70s prizes.
This was the last race in the Meirionnydd Winter Series with victory over the three hills, Rhobell
Fawr, Tarrenhendre and yr Aran going to Sion Edwards of Eryri in 3:23:57 from Peter Jones of
Oswestry and Darren Hesleton of Bro Dysynni.
Mel Morris (Denbigh) took the female prize in 4:40:21. The winners each received a half side of lamb.
Darren’s son Tom Hesleton (Bro Dysynni) won the Garth Fawr race for juniors in an excellent time of 19:20. two runners retired in the first quarter and one failed to make the cut-off at the first checkpoint.

January 2022.
29/1/22: Ras Tarrenhendre Race.
Thanks to easing of covid restrictions our initial field restriction of 50 was expanded to 100 with 94 entering and 72 starting the race. The morning was mostly better than forecast but it was windy and heavy rain fell for 45 minutes before the 12 o’clock start and for the first 30 minutes after. This just wetted the surface of anything that had been drying on the course and many Tarren die-hards reported the descent was a slippery as they had ever known. However the sun came out and runners were rewarded with spectacular views as the cloud rolled away before they entered “Mirkwood” and attention had to be concentrated on the feet and which bit of bog it was best to ski down next. The race order was almost sorted by the top of the second stiff climb. Race winner Tom Wood (Eryri Harriers) lead throughout but team mate Tom Haynes was overtaken before the forest top by previous winner Gareth Wyn Hughes. Wood finished in 49:20 smashing the Owen Huw Roberts (Eryri) 2016 junior men’s record by 5:43. Hughes (M40) finished in 50:13 and Haynes 51:38.
Sarah Kleeman (F40) was the first woman and 23rd overall in 1:01:20 with Emily Cowper-Coles (Oswestry Olympians) in second place in 1:02:46 and Jackie Lee (Eryri F40) was next in 1:04:15.
Age category winners were:
Joel Gomez, Wrexham AAC, M40, 53:41
Nicola Richards, Mercia Fell Runners F40 1:09:12
Simon Edwards, Buckley Runners M50 1:01:44
Ruth Metcalfe, Eryri F50 1:15:24
Russel Owen, Eryri M60 1:02:46
Juliet Edwards, Meirionnydd RC F60 1:16:04
John Morris, Buckley Runners M70 1:39:31
Maggie Oliver, Eryri F70 1:47:23
The only other record broken was the F60. Juliet Edwards celebrated another recent big birthday by taking Maggie Oliver’s 2008 record by 48 seconds. She can add this to her 2012 F50 record which still stands.
This race is the second of three in the Meirionnydd Winter Series. 13 men and 9 women are in with a chance of joining the select band who have completed a series. Sion Edwards (Eryri) has a 6 minute lead over team mate Lawrence Ramsay and Jackie Lee almost 9 minutes on Nicola Richards. Neither margin is insuperable over the Ras yr Aran course which provides a much tougher test than today’s race and this year will be a counter in the North Wales Series. Entries via Fabian 4 will open during February.
Gwion was first goat and well under the hour in 12th place overall in 55:34, Rhodri ap Dyfrig M40 was next in and 24th in 1:01:34 and Rhys Davies third and 33rd overall in 1:06:37 just beating by a second Ieuan Pugh-Jones. Well done to Adam Preston, Cai Jones, Aranli Thomas, just ahead of Nia Evans with Glyn Rowlands and Helen Jones following on. Congratulations alike to newcomers and those that should know better!
