Ras Yr Aran Winter Fell Race, Age group course records,:
(Established 2004 – new course 2005)

A difficult couple of days of viral uncertainty preceded this years Ras yr Aran, the first leg of the UKA Mountain and Fell Running Championship. We decided to follow government guidance and continue but wondered how many might chose not to attend. The weather dawned in gloomy harmony but lightened as the wind freshened. Nonetheless runners and marshals were condemned to poor visibility, driving rain and 40+ mph winds. It was very wet underfoot.

312 brave types started the full 10m 3000ft course and very rapid time was made to the first checkpoint; Rob Samuel (Eryri H) lead a pack of 12 runners through in <26 minutes - Ross Gollan (Shettleston H) second, Finlay Wild (Lochaber AC) in the middle, and Eoin Lennon (Carnethy HRC) a leisurely 16th. M40 Simon Bailey (Mercia) was fastest on the second half of the climb topping out in 52:04 4th behind Gollan (51:31) with Lennon getting into gear arriving in 6th place 5 seconds behind Wild. A surefooted descent saw Wild quickest by 1:19 back to Moel Ffenigl giving him a 27 second lead over Gollan and they finished Wild 1:25:22, Gollan 1:26:16 and Lennon 1:26:43

Despite the conditions Tom Wood (Eryri) took Karl Steinegger’s 2009 MU23 record in 1:32:07 and Bailey captured Richard Robert’s M40 record finishing 10th overall in 1:30:12.

Keswick AC’s Hannah Horsburgh led the women race throughout, reaching the top in 58:07 practically a minute ahead of V40 Victoria Wilkinson (Bingly H) and team mate Nichola Jackson also under the hour, and this was the finish order with Horsburgh having a 3:28 lead over Wilkinson who was 26 seconds clear of Jackson.

Horsburgh took Kate Bailey’s 2009 open course record by 5 minutes with a finish of 1:36:01. Wilkinson took the F40 record from Melanie Price (Mercia 2015) by 8 minutes in 1:39:29. Only just behind Jackson was Hannah Russel (Helm Hill) who smashed the FU23 record (Lois Lee -St Davids) by 30 minutes finishing in 1:41:44.

309 runners completed. 3 DNF with 135 DNS.

As well as the Champs this is the third and final of the Meirionnydd Winter Series of races which was won by Richard Roberts (Eryri) in a total time of 3:26:39 and Alice Forster (Black Comb) in 4:02:10. The junior race winner was Oliver Bailey (Mercia), in 19:19. One to watch!

Marisha De la Rouviere ran in the Seville Marathon. Marisha said "What happens when a mountain Goat takes on the flattest Gold Label marathon in Europe?. Pure magic! maratonsevilla was everything I dreamed it would be. Average HR 156. Aerobic marathon PB by a whole 5 mins and that at the end of a 100km week. Thanks so much to the amazing group of guys with whom I ran in an Ineos sub 2 type huddle for most of the way. I don't know who you are, but running with you was an honor. I loved every second of that.

25/1/2020 Club Dinner & Prize evening.
The annual Dinner was held at the Ship Hotel in Dolgellau and following the meal the Prizes for the 2019 year were awarded to:

25/1/20 Tarren hendre.

The second of this year’s Winter Series races took place on Tarrenhendre last Saturday. The weather was better than expected with no wind in the valley and the clouds waited for the start before enveloping the hill. No rain for a week meant good conditions underfoot. 17 Goats were in the line up of 83 starters which included a strong Eryri contingent and runners from as far afield as the Isle of Man, Derbyshire and Solihull. We reduced marshal points by 4, replacing them with signs - only to have the last sign changed round by some idiot before the race start, this lost some runners some time and places.

Tristan managed 3rd place behind Chris McLean of Cerist Tri, both beaten by an on form Gareth Wyn Hughes who finished in 10:50. Tristan was 18 seconds ahead of Eryri’s Richard Roberts who is now just over a minute ahead as they go to the Aran and Tris’ attempt to be the first runner to win the series 3 years running (no pressure!).
after two races, just Aran to go.

tarren hendre 2020

Gwion was the second club runner home beating the hour at his first attempt at the race and finishing in 9th place. Jimmy was in 17th, just behind Bro Dysynni’s Darren Helston in their M40s battle, and Jeremy Randell just managed to hold off new Goat Rhys Davies in the M50s 1:05:31 and 45 respectively. Ben was a couple of places behind them minute ahead of Dylan and 6 places ahead of Adam - out training for his London marathon.

First MRC woman was new Goat Eleanor Davies 3rd F40 and 40th overall. Evergreen Juliet took the F50 prize in 1:16:57 with Glyn a couple of minutes behind her. Also training for London and reviving his racing career in style was Old Goat Tony Hodgson who knocked 3.5 minutes of Phil Jones’ (Prestayn) M70 record which has stood for 7 years. Nia Penrhiw in her fell debut easily beat the 90 minutes some way ahead of Pete and Neil who finished in 69th and 70th a few places ahead of Helen and Sandra, both doing the race for the first time.too.

Kevin sacrificed his run to play sweeper bringing up the rear...oops Kevin you’ve missed a couple of bits! After last years spectacular departure from the race route on the bwlch which ended in Machynlleth station this year’s attempt at navigational excellence, this time by Goats Steffan and Francois was more mild. Pete reported that after arriving together at the top Steffan shot off downhill following the fast disappearing blue of Francois. Unfortunately it was also Francois first time on the hill and together they managed quite a few Kms Pennal-ward before Francois tells me he noticed how far he had deviated from the route on his GPS watch. Wisely they retraced their steps together and rang Tom to get a message to Race control that they were still on the go. Time having moved on considerably by the time they got to checkpoint 3 they were recorded as DNF and offered a lift down! Goats should note that use of GPS for navigation in the race would result in disqualification, but is perfectly acceptable to get you home once you have abandoned hope!

The first woman, in 11th place overall was Sophie Horrocks (Rossendale Harriers) in 59:46; Alice Forster (Black Combe Runners) was hot on her heels in 59:50 with Eryri Harrier’s Miranda Grant ensuring all three women beat the hour (59:58).

Rhys Jones also got under the hour (59:48) to take the Junior Men’s prize. Mathew Fortes of Eryri was 4th overall and first M40 (54:21), with Michael Reynolds of Mercia taking M50 in 1:03:54 and Stephen Jones (Eryri) was first M60 in 1:03:04.

Sarah Ridgeway was first F40 in 1:04:3 and Maggie Oliver (Eryri) F70 in 1:45:04. A strong Eryri presence took both team prizes, from MRC.

Catering by Goats do Soup & Cakes was as usual much appreciated, many thanks to Sarah and her kitchen team (and Gareth for peeling everything). Course marking and marshalling were again superb with HQ always knowing the whereabouts -approximately- of all runners. Registration and timekeeping again achieved a flawless performance. A huge thanks to all, and not forgetting Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team for being there and NRW for letting us play in their woods ( and tidying them up specially for us! Finally thanks to the WFRA for the loan of the radios -oh and lets not forget Billy-no-mates Arfon, our sainted Chairman who again spent the whole race on a completely different mountain, coordinating the whole show over the radio relay! Seriously again great team effort a flawless event.
