7/11/15 Rhobell Fawr.
Saturday morning had wind heavy rain and cloud down to 500 ft. 64 runners turned up to battle the elements, and there was just a hint of disappointment as just before the start the top came out of the cloud and the rain stopped and pre race notices were delivered with the promise of sunshine! The wise don’t trust in promises and before the first checkpoint the weather was closing in rapidly offering heavy rain high winds and very restricted visibility.

Most runners hugged the wall up and down. Gareth Wyn Hughes was first man back in 51:17, over a minute ahead of Mynydd Ddu’s Mark Palmer who in 52:23 took Edward Davies’ (Mercia) 2006 over 50 record 55:01. Third place went to last years Meirionnydd Winter Series winner Karl Steinegger of Ambleside AC in 57:06.

The Women’s competition was won by Katie Beecher of Mynydd Ddu in 59:08 with Sarah Ridgeway second in 1:01:55 with rising star of Eryri Bronwen Jenkinson taking third place in1:06:29, taking the Junior Woman record of 1:07:43 from Beckie Taylor (Bangor UAC).

Everyone reported the conditions on the summit as pretty wild - refreshing was one description- and there was much gratitude for the volunteers, and delight in the soup and cakes in the village hall after.
We look forward to the second race at Tarren Hendre with its 3 steep climbs and mad forest descent on Jan 30th. NB.

20/9/2015 Ston 15km Croatia.
Nich Bradley had another age win and was a bit gobsmacked to be 4th overall in 1:21:16 (New M60 club record. Juliet Edwards was 3rd overall in 1:31:55 and Graeme was 2 places behind her in 18th 1:32:44.

Nich said "Its a fun race, as hard to categorise as the twin peaks, with a kilometre of fast tarmac then 3 miles over the hill on the top of a narrow medieval stone wall, with a very low parapet, followed by brief trip through town and then a 10 k first across salt pans then along the shore and then a few hundred feet of climbing before the turnaround.

It was pretty hot despitee the 7-30 !! kickoff. (thats a.m.). The variety made it very interesting. The field was pretty international, 27 Croats out of 68 runners, 20 from Pasadena, and South Africans, Taiwanese and a Ghanaan as well as 2 other brits. We were made very welcome and the seafood risotto made it worth running, as well as a day glow tee. They had an interesting chip system, in the number but read on an iPhone at the finish and fed instantly to a laptop display."

Message from the Club Chair.
Hi,
There are some important matters to bring to your attention from the last committee meeting.
Thank you.
First and foremost, Pete and Sue Nicholls have asked to leave the committee, which between them they have served for more than 15 years. This is for family and personal reasons and they will continue as active members, and as organisers of the Dol 5 (on JULY 25th!). We have known of their intention for some time now and it is good to know that they are still about to help with the transition. They have made a huge contribution to the setting up and development of the club, and both have been inspirational in their running development. I am sure you will want to join me in a huge vote of thanks to them both and in sending them both our best wishes for the future.
New committee member
This leads to the second point. The committee was feeling a bit stretched before Sue and Pete’s decision and we really need some new blood to join us. Graeme Stringer has kindly agreed to be coopted back onto the committee, and will act as secretary for now, but we would really like at least 2 more new members. Essential requirements are an enthusiasm for the club and for promoting running in Meirionnydd and a commitment to get to a monthly evening meeting. For a trial period we are moving these to a Wednesday after the club run so this might only occupy one evening of your week for 10 or 11 months of the year. PLEASE get in touch with me via email or on a Wednesday night if you would like to give it a try. New members and social members are as welcome as our most successful runners. Most of the existing committee are, or nearly are, founder members and we really need to be getting a new generation if the club is to thrive in future.
Pen Trail
With great regret we have decided not to hold the Pen Trail race this year. We had selected an early October date to avoid clashes with a growing number of alternative trails, but then discovered this was to be the opening meeting for the cross country league. September is compromised by the World MastersMountain Running Championship in Bettws and by many of the usual organisers going to the Ston Marathon. To go later conflicts with Rhobell. It seems better to cancel than to run a poorly attended event or one not organised to the high standard the club has set over the years. There is no reason why it can’t return in future.
Newtown 5k
I hope as summer arrives you are all running well and training towards the Dol 5! To that end the club is organising a bus to the Newtown 5k race on Friday 3rd July, More details to follow but we will need to leave Dolgellau pretty close to 5 pm so think how you might arrange this and come along, watch FaceBook for more detail.
Nich, Chair MRC.

For the second year the club provided a minibus for runners to attend the race. Seven runners participated with a troop of supporters in tow.

Jeremy ran in the Hot foot up Moel Fammau fell race, Jeremy finished 2nd M50 in 41:23.

17/6/15, Club Run, Cregennan.
Wednesday night Club run, short run in Cregennan.
Nich Said "The hardy folk of the Wednesday nights split into two tonight at a misty Cregennan; a low level round the lake group and an over the hill and far away group."

16/6/15, Tal y mignedd.
Round 11 Joe Brown midweek series
Nich Bradley was the sole Meirionnydd runner finishing in a time of 49:36.

14/6/15, Liverpool Rockn Roll Half Marathon.
Two Meirionnydd runners ran in Liverpool today.

Lucie LLewellyn, making a welcome return to running said "Just got back from LIverpool Rock N Roll Half marathon and feel massively chuffed with myself. Was looking at a time of about 3 hours based on recent training runs. Had to take the inhaler 3 times during the race and struggled with the breathing at times but overall felt ok and didn't take any walk breaks at all - not even when taking in water or gels. Was so chuffed to cross the finish line in a much quicker than anticipated 2hrs30 which I am SO pleased with despite the circumstances. Fab race and really enjoyed running around Liverpool and its beautiful parks and along the docks to the finish."
Lucie finished the half in 2:32:45
Elly Dee took on the Marathon and said "With only 8 weeks since Manchester and busy at work. I ran in those 8 weeks, but not often enough or far enough and I struggled with fitting runs in as well as a general lack of energy too (not surprising really). Didn't run at all in the two weeks leading up to the race.
As a result of this, so I'd already decided I would not stress about times and just enjoy it.
So many people I know were running, or were in Liverpool today, so it was always going to be a social occasion. I knew it would be awesome to run: the fact that it's an amazing city, there were lots of live bands playing around the whole course, and of course, I got to run past Anfield (and Goodison Park too).

It was awesome to run. I met up with running friends old and new. The weather was perfect. The organisation was perfect, by Lucie in booking our hotel pretty much on the start and finish line (as well as bagging a late checkout, which meant I could lie in the bath whilst she made be cups of tea and brought me bananas!!) and by the Rock n Roll team. We didn't queue to pick up my number yesterday, we didn't queue to pick up our t-shirts yesterday, or even for the toilets right before the race! Never before have I not had to queue for anything at a race.
The route was lovely, the marshals, the St John team (didn't need them today, thank goodness) and the water/gel station teams were all so efficient, helpful and supportive.
I absolutely loved the bands all the way round too, they were awesome and really helped lift spirits when needed in the middle. I would recommend Rock n Roll events to anyone and hope to do more in the future. Oh and the medals are flippin' amazing!
Awesome race experience"
Elly finished in 5:11:06.

10/6/15, Trail Race up the Beast.
Jeremy said ""A great little race that starts in Masehafn. Through the woods up over Bryn Alyn, round the base and scramble up and over again before the run back through the wood to the finish - and the Miners' Arms!"
Last year we had thunderstorms but this year the conditions were ideal and apparently 96 runners completed the course - a first in the race's history
Jeremy Randell finished in 41:09 1st M50.
6/6/15, Welsh 1000.
Mark Atherton and Nich Bradley were out on this challenging race described on the website as "... a gruelling event, even in fine weather and is the supreme test of fitness, endurance and navigational skills amongst some of Britain’s finest mountain terrain. The long Fell Race is considered to be one of the most arduous events in the UK fell running calendar."
Mark finished in 05:01:16 and Nich in 06:39:03.
Nich said of the week: What a week!
Sunday: Matt Ward's Anna Frost 10k trail race - great route and a fine battle with Jayne Angilley from Cornwall AC all the way back from the bridge.
Tuesday night Mike Blakes 3miles Penmaenmawr 3 hills - 45 minutes climbing vertical gorse-bring your gloves!
Wednesday night a night the tourist board couldn't have bettered - club run in a Corris so beautiful you couldn't believe, Lovely relaxing run and a good pint in the Slater's Arms afterwards.
Then Welsh 1000m peaks race. Am I too old? Am I carrying too much or not enough? Will I make the cut off? 2 13 milers , non climbing higher than Cader road is no preparation for this 20 mile tour of Snowdonia, and so much for tapering! Actually it was brilliant! Wild on the Carneddau gusts more like 80mph than the 50 forecast, risk of hypothermia and sunburn! Lovely swoop to Ogwen, no stopping straight on to the Gribin and a jog down the red spot to Pen y Pas. Then a walk up the PYG track - helpful walkers shouting "runners coming through" - well sort of! A sneaky gel on the zig-zags then managed to pull away from the two guys I had travelled so far with. Into the cold mist and wind , a dash up Disgle then the summit. MAGIC. Despite the weather at least 20 minutes off my PB. No prizes no sponsors but running can give sooo much happiness. ...cant move today!!!
Good race here.

With over 5,500 feet of steep ascent, Excalibur will take you to the edge. Excalibur tests the limits of each and every person who attempts to conquer it. Both a head for heights and a brave heart are needed to complete this challenge. Do you have what it takes?"

21/3/15, Oen Aran Lamb - Ras Yr Aran race.
A big thank you for the support and the delicious burgers to Oen Aran lamb.

What a difference a year makes no snow but glorious Sunshine. Those runners that prepared for the cold had to stop to take off thermals on the way up. And at Aran Benllyn, the start of the plateau, visibility was crystal clear with Aran Mawddwy looking a long way off. At the trig point on Aran Mawddwy the new Meirionnydd flag greeted the runners and signalled the return leg.

This year's winner was Richard Roberts from Eryri Harriers finishing in a time of 1:29:22 and the first woman was Mel Price from Mercia Fell Runners who broke the F40 course record by finishing in a time of 1:47:39.
We also saw the M70 course record broken by Geoffrey Fielding from Clwydian Range Runners who finished in a time of 02:36:26.
Full results: here.
Nine Meirionnydd Runners took part. Dave Parker finishing joint 3rd with Martin Cliffe from Eryri Harriers.

5/3/15, Annual General Meeting AGM.
The AGM was held on 5th March at the Leisure Centre in Dolgellau.
Nich Bradley gave the Chairman’s report 2014:
Introduction
The Club is now entering its 10th year. It has remained active and is still punching above its weight in competitions across all disciplines within Wales. Without stealing the thunder of my colleagues who will report next, we remain financially viable and membership has been stable over the last couple of years with a steady turnover and new blood replacing those who drop away. For some years there seemed to be a permanent in the top runners in the club with Ifan regularly winning the Billy goat trophy. Refreshingly this is no longer the case and it seems that each year produces new talent and success comes to runners it has eluded in the past and PBs crop up for all of us from time to time. Overall excluding the cross country league competitions club runners competed in 295 races in 2014 approximately 50% on the road, 30% on the fell, and 20% on trails. Ultra races are increasing in popularity with 7 last year, 3 of 50 miles 2 of 42 and 2 of 50k.
Honours
Caps
Tom Roberts had his first Welsh Cap at the Betws Trail Championships, and captained the victorious North Wales team at the Abergele 5 Road running championship at Abergele.
Jeremy Randell and Alex Lanz joined Tom in gaining North Wales caps at the Welsh Cross Country championship.
Championships
Tom won the North Wales Road running championships at 5k and 10k.
In M45 category Arfon Hughes took first in the North Wales 5 mile championship, 3rd at 5k in both the North Wales and the All Wales Championships.
Sioned Jones took the second place in the F35 category in the North Wales 5 Mile race.
Jeremy Randal finished 3rd M50 in the North Wales Fell Running Championship.
Tom finished a close 4th in the WA Run Wales road race series, the only North Wales athlete in the top 10, and was third overall in the 4 race La Santa championship in Lanzarote. Overall he had 9 outright wins.
Sandra Williams, in her first ever ultra the 50 mile Wye One Way, won the women's competition in 11:58.
Nicola Rees took the Aran Lamb Winter Fell race women’s prize maintaining the tradition of the half lamb prize being won by vegetarians!
In August Rachael Bateman, in her first outing for the club, won the Ponderosa Fell race
Clive Edgington in a year dogged by injury took a win in the short Pen Trail race.
Time stops me going through age category wins, but in general the rest of us have been pretty active and 44 of us have recorded at least one race.
On the Fell
Alan Jones, and Jeremy Randell were the most active on the fells, Jeremy achieving many O50 placings on his way to his overall 3rd place. Injury put paid to Juliet Edward’s year after picking up a 3rd place F50 at Llantisilio, and Nicola Rees turned out regularly but otherwise it has been a quiet year for the women on the hill.
Cross Country
The women also were unable to produce a team for the cross country league but, led by Clive, ten men did manage despite injury to compete throughout and keep us up in the first division again. Cross Country is accepted as good winter training and the committee does intend to re-enter next year. It costs the club to enter but running is free so if you don't go you are subsidising someone else! The distance we are from most of the venues does make it amazing that we compete at all. If demand was there thought club could organise transport.
Trail
Trail running continues to grow in the area with more and more commercial races appearing with good advertising and usually very good organisation. This has caused us some grief with clashes with our 3 last races, but as more events appear this is going to be inevitable and the good news is it gives us all more choice. Most of us seem to have done some trails over the year, with a few age category placings but no major wins coming our way. The committee is keen t work with other organisers locally to promote running to locals and encourage visitors to our races.
Road
10 and 5 races have been the most popular (45) with halves a little less so (31). Apart from the championships I have mentioned we have had lots of age placings, with Jeff Davies storming around the country picking up 9 M65 firsts and several placings along with a number of club records, in his 19 races, the second highest total. Keith Williams saw his PB drop in 3 consecutive 10ks over the summer, Ricky Francis picked up a first M35 at Newtown 10k and Sioned had a first in the same age group at the Dol5. It has been good to see Graeme Stringer have a good year with very respectable times on all surfaces and managing no fewer than 18 races in the year.
Parkruns are beginning to appear in our activity despite the nearest being Aberystwyth and I believe a new one in Bangor. These 5k runs are held all over the country on Saturday mornings usually 9 am and are free and, after on line registration, very easy; you just turn up someone says go and you do a 5 k at your pace, there are usually a few brisk walkers and always prams and dogs. After the race you can just disappear and get on with your day and in the afternoon your result is emailed to you, Simples! If you are able to get to Penrhyn castle or Aber I would recommend it, if not but you are going away, sneak at a look for one near you and consider letting the family have a lazy breakfast wile you get your fix.
Goats were spotted around the globe, Lisbon, Spain, and Lanzarote-of course,Telfes in Austria and widely in the UK from Edinburgh (where Sandra had a marathon PB) to Jersey -Elly’s marathon.
Our Races
Tarren Hendre was threatened by bad weather for the week before and on the day pressure from Mountain Rescue forced us to change the route for the first time. The race was thus a trail rather than a fell, but the hardy souls who turned up were understanding and said it stood up as a good trail, however as a result we have now recede an alternative bad weather route that does have a section on the ridge, I just hope we never need it! Felipe Jones and Louise Barker (both AberystwythAC) won.
Aran also happened on a vile day with high winds and lying snow, the race was shortened to Benllyn, again without complaint from the runners. Felipe Jones and Katie Beecher of Les Croupiers won. Huw Brassington late of MRC took the male half of the Aran Lamb award.
The Dol 5 by comparison took place in great heat and the water station hose pipe shower was much appreciated. Tom Roberts provided a home win in 27:28. And Laura Shewbridge from Colchester Harriers made their teams’s journey up worthwhile with a 32:36 first place. Despite the heat there were new race records atM35 F35 and F60, and class wins for Sioned and Nikki.
The Trail Fest was badly hit by the first Porthmadog RTT trail choosing the same date in blissful ignorance of our dates. We decided to go ahead and aim at providing a simple low key - low cost race as alternative to the razzmatazz and significant cost of the RTT. In reality we were saved by a great showing from Newtown who came up to support us in response to our turning out for their evening races. There is a useful lesson for us there. Clive won the 3 miler which is surprisingly unpopular (the race not Clive’s win!) as its a cracking little course and we should be getting more novices on it. Katie Bailey had the women’s prize and in the 9 miler Alan Williams u/a 59 mins and Maldwyn women had the podium to themselves Hannah Owen 1:15:14 taking the top spot.
Rhobell was the final race in the Wales Open and North Wales Fell running championships and saw wins for Paul Jones (51:35 Mercia) and Caitlin Rice (58:21 Glossopdale). New course records were set for junior men F40 and F50.
Apart from racing the main activity the club is the Wednesday night runs. Attendance at these has been dropping this yea and feedback on what people want would be much appreciated. The social calendar has also been less active. There was an excellent trip to the Newtown BBQ 5k for which a minibus was organised and the Llew Goch at Dinas ensured it wasn't just Tom with a good time. We also would appreciate feedback on what social events people would like.
I sent out an email after Christmas inviting comments or suggestions for the future of the club. The overwhelming response suggests everyone is delighted with the current state of affairs, or petrified of being given a job! If thats not the case please tell us! We have managed to get 5 more people through LiRF courses and one is due to start a coaching course soon. We also arranged first aid training for 7 members. Dreams of a junior section are pretty well stalled at the moment, and without a group of people able to commit significant time to it likely to stay that way.
It remains for me to thank all my committee members for their support and diligence over the year and especially to Clive and Lucie who wish to stand down. Clive has a lot of experience in big clubs elsewhere and his insight advice has been much appreciated, as well as his work in organising mens teams over the years. Who said goat herding was easy! Lucie came on board as Welfare officer a role WA expects us to have one, and has done a lot of work behind the scenes in organising our procedures and paperwork. Her successor should have a much easier time as a result. A sincere thanks to both and we are grateful for your offers of continued support.

31/1/15, Bolton parkrun #202.
Today Ricky Francis became a real Bolton Wanderer when he took part in the town's Park Run. He started impressively and then made a small navigation error which resulted in him attempting a third lap of part of the course. After going down the hill again he realised his mistake and retraced his steps. However this probably added a good minute and a half to his overall time of 23.42.
There were 267 other runners. Ricky was a tad disappointed with today's outcome. Maybe Ricky's thoughts were on the afternoon's Manchester United Game, hopefully his team will not loose their way against Leicester City!

24/1/15, Gran Canaria 10K.
In distinctly warmer conditions Jeff Davies ran the Gran Canaria 10K in Las Palmas finishing in 44.16 and 2nd MV65.
Jeff Said "At around 1K with the field beginning to sort itself, I heard a voice from behind saying “Hello Meirionnydd” – it was this guy from Abergele Harriers. Can’t go anywhere can you?
Sadly, I wasn’t first UK finisher - a blonde woman called Radcliffe beat me. OK, only by 10 minutes....

24/1/15, Coed y Brenin Winter Trail Half Marathon.

Elly said "Absolutely awesome trail half this morning in my favourite place ever to run, Coed y Brenin. Never raced this route before, although I've run it and parts of it many times. I loved every single minute, great weather, great organisation (as expected) and was soooo pleased with my run. Really nice to see lots of friends too. Love love love trail running."
Christine said "Well it wasn't fast and it wasn't pretty but I did it winter trail Wales in 3.08. Strapping up my knee seems to of worked as feeling ok at the moment even though I felt like it was cutting off my circulation at times. And my whole leg seized up on the final muddy descent but all part of the fun right. Kevin did it in 2.38 woo hoo."
Pete Barnes (New member) said "I have to confess that my first run in a Meirionydd vest was something of a baptism of fire/embarrassment as a it quickly became obvious that three or four shortish runs after a long injury induced layoff are simply not enough for a Coed Y Brenin trail race. The uphill start was the hardest I've ever known, the uphill finish was also the hardest and pretty much everything in-between was as well. Added to that I had made the stupid beginner's mistake of forgetting the vaseline and not realising that a running vest (the sort with water bottles on - not the club one) can really, really rub the nipples (you get the idea - perhaps more detail than needed?) And don't even get me started on the serious hill at about mile 12 - whose sadistic idea is that! "
