17/11/13, Swindon 10k.
Jeff Davies ran in the Swindon 10k. Jeff said "Well, I did the Swindon 10K last Sunday and on a perfect [if murky] day for running,
I did it in 42.09 with which I was very pleased. However, it only got me 5th M60 which says something about quality of the field.
1st M60 finished in, wait for it, 36.39 with the 2nd in 37.15. Must be something in the water down here. Personally, I’ll stick to beer."
Good effort Jeff, sounds like really stiff competition down there.
16/11/13, Likeys Brecon Beacons Ultra.
Ashley Charlwood took part in his first Ultra finishing in 8:12:23 to gain 26th position out of 152.
Read his write up on his blog here
From the website "The Beacons Ultra is a mere 46ish mile mixed trail/mountain/canal/road run around the magnificent Brecon Beacons in the middle of November, when climatic conditions can vary quite considerably. In the events 5 year history the race has taken place in everything from sparkling Sunshine through to minus 8 degrees, with obligatory rain and mist thrown in to remind the athletes that they are running in Wales in all its glory."

16/11/13, British and Irish Masters Cross Country International.
Congratulations to Ifan Richards on winning another cap for Wales in the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International down in Cardiff. In what looks like a very fast race Ifan finished in 27:21.
Ifan said "Quality fields are what brings you on and in my case a big eye opener I was in a field of 35-45yr olds at the British & Irish XC champs last weekend and
I completed the distance for the race a tad over 8k (5 miles) in a PB for the distance 27:20 and that's on the Country (new club record?) not road and it got me 74th out of 90!
It's insane the quality of these runners, the field was riddled with 800, 1000, 1500, 3000, 5000mtr track champions, 30 to 32min 10k'ers.

10/11/13, LLyn y Fan Fell Race & Inov-8/WFRA Open Welsh Fell Championships 2013.
Juliet Edwards was our sole representative in the final race of the Inov-8/WFRA Open Welsh Fell Championships 2013 series at the LLyn y Fan (5.5 miles/2000 feet) in the Brecon Beacons. Juliet finished as the 2nd F50 in a time of 1:05:46 to claim 2nd place in the Championship and Mark Atherton finished in 6th place in the Championship.
Juliet Edwards said "I know that Rhobell is one of the best middle distance fell races on the planet , even from the viewpoint of a hailstone beaten summit marshal.
However ,if you ever get the chance to do the Llyn y Fan fell race , just go for it.
Only 80+ miles to a quiet corner of the Black mountains, I somehow managed to find the start-despite a moody sat-nav which tried to get me to drive through an overflowing ford.
The setting is wonderful, views stunning with a great route (5 mile 2000ft) including steady climb , undulating ridge route followed by bum sliding drop then a slightly tussocky 1+ mile charge to the finish.
The only thing they did not mention in the essential kit check was sunglasses. Brilliant!

9/11/13, Ras Rhobell fawr fell race.
This was the 11th Rhobell Fawr fell race and once again it was a cracker.
Apart from a brief hail shower the weather held out, visibility was excellent giving today's race photographers Ifan Richards and Ieuan Jones an opportunity to take some great shots.

20/10/2013, Fell Relay Championship, LLanberis.
A belated but big thank you to my team mates for a great day at the fell running relay championships.
Not having raced for 18 months I was beginning to see the long downhill looming but training for this has got me going again and the day rewarded in spades. The long leg had a couple of miles run in to the hill bottom apparently madly swinging over to the Snowdon railway line where a nice (ie downhill) cart track actually leads straight to the base of Moel Cyngorion - think second steep bit of Tarren Hendre for 2000'!
Then a brilliant roller coaster with winds so strong that at one point we were bent double, leaning into it and forcing ourselves DOWNHILL!! Truly blinding rain showers and just a hint of total nervous and physical exhaustion suggested the new waterproof top might be better on than in my bag just before the top of Moel Eilio where we started the superb wind driven downhill swoop to the top of the quarries. There it all got a bit technical and muddy (ask Kev Jones how muddy) and a gentle bit of tarmac ramp to allow a respectable run in to pass the batton to Dylan and Kev Evans.
A great team day out, Clive set us up nicely in 11th place (over 50s) on leg one and I just managed to keep sight of Juliet's back so we lost just one place. Dylan and Kev E devoted huge time and effort to locating their checkpoints on the nav leg, and arrived back with Kev's shoe dying of a nasty hernia of most of the insole through the sidewall! Kev J's very brief trip up Moel Eilo direct, and his heroic go at downhill bog snorkling ensured we weren't last so honour was satisfied. Again a big thanks to the team especially Juliet for seeing me safe round and to Clive for organising.
Also thanks to Eryri for some seriously good organisation of a huge event in serious weather - it ran like clockwork.
Nich Bradley.

"The race format of Red Bull Steeplechase is a unique knock out format. Competitors are split into two categories, male and female. All runners in each category are set off together making it a head to head race against the rest of the field where race position is important not time.
There are four steeples to reach and at each of the first three the slowest section of the field will be eliminated. Only 40 runners will reach the final steeple at Castleton.
This makes this race a unique format and will challenge runners both physically and mentally as they have to pace themselves not only to cover the distance and challenging terrain but to ensure they stay in a race position that prevents them from being eliminated."

20/3/13. Wednesday Night Training.
Tonight was the first of the summer seasons training runs. The Sheelagh Vaughan memorial run from the George III at Penmaenpool near Dolgellau. 11 runners attended, three ladies went down the railway line while the other eight ran up into the foothills of Cadair Idris. Unusually for a summer run we had to cross several snow drifts, over 2ft deep in places.
One lost goat, having a senior moment, turned up at the leisure centre, this was despite having written the summer programme himself.
23/3/2013. Ras yr Aran - MRC Winter Race series.
Due to severe weather, snow and high winds, and advice from mountain rescue Ras yr Aran Race was cancelled this year. The picture below wasn't taken on race day but a few weeks before. Met office were predicting -16C on top of Aran Benllyn. On the day we had Blizzards and freezing easterlies. All agree it was a good idea to cancel. Full results here.

3/3/13. Tour of Torpantau.
Dave Parker started his attempt at the 2013 Welsh Open Fell Running Championship at the Tour of Torpantau.
Quite a few had navigation issues on the race including the 13 runners who didn't finish DNF.
Dave commented: "Back in one piece, although it wasn't looking so good at times. A group of us went off course early in the race but doubled back to CP1. Myself and Karl Steinegger later went off course for a second time in the mist. Heavens knows how many miles we covered!
It was a nightmare to be honest, as people were going in all directions and saying different things which was really confusing. I managed to get all the check points and finish but I was just glad to get down as I was frozen solid at the finish."
Looking at the results it appears a lot of the usual leaders also struggled and despite the difficulties, Dave managed to complete the race and came 45th in 1:35:51.

16/02/13. Welsh National XC Championships, Glan Usk.
Clive Edington travelled the 110 mile journey down to Glan Usk yesterday for the Welsh National XC Champs. A really good venue with good weather. The course was fairly dry with a couple of streams to run across on each of the three big laps. A couple of small hills to contend with but generally quite a flat course. Clive came in 54th in 42:39. Full results: here.
9/02/13. North Wales Cross Country championship Rhug.
Away from the fells, at the North Wales Cross Country championship Rhug near Corwen, the weather was good and conditions were ideal for a good cross country race. On the very wet and muddy fields the two Meirionnydd Runners present both had a successful day. Clive won the M55 category and Barry Jackson came second in the M70.
9/02/13. Tarren hendre.
Tarren hendre produced another great race and an excellent challenge for all who took part. With three steep challenging climbs, immediately followed by difficult navigation in the mist on the slopes off the main hill. Several runners strayed away from the fence line and attempted the faster route along the contoured track but only to fall too far down and struggle to regain their positions. Two runners ended up in Pennal, luckily they were given a lift back to race HQ.

At the last race day of the 2012/13 season in the North Wales Cross Country league. Five MRC runners travelled to Oswestry. Barrie Jackson ran in the first race, which was fortunate as he was able to give the later racers a briefing on the ground conditions. He was asked to join our team for the second race, he declined.
