WFRA NORTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIP 2012
Following the Rhobell race on Saturday, the WFRA held their presentation ceremony for the overall Welsh Champions and N. Wales Champions. A very good day for Meirionnydd RC, and a good season with consistent racing over the year and regular top 3 & 5 placings in the counting races.
Dave Parker capped off a tremendous first season for the club by claiming 2nd overall in the Welsh Championships behind Welsh & GB international Tim Davies. Very satisfying was the next award for the N. Wales Championships as Meirionnydd took a clean sweep, with Ifan Richards defending his N. Wales Championship trophy for the 3rd year in sucession. It didn't end there as Dave Parker took the 2nd place & Glyn Griffin 3rd on the N. Wales podium after a very strong season.

MRC Runners - International mountain race in Italy 2012.

25/10/12. International mountain race in Italy.
Ifan Richards - International Cap representing Wales.
Last weekend Ifan headed off to north Italy as part of the Welsh team to race in the prestigious Trofeo Vanoni Mountain relay race. The race takes place in the town of Morbegno in north Italy, not far from the Swiss border and twinned with Llanberis, the Vanoni race is also twinned with the Snowdon international race.
This years race was also the final round of the Italian mountain running championships. As well as the International teams, (including the Swiss, French, Slovenian, Finish, and Danish), the finest clubs from Italy were there to battle it out.
The race started at 2pm in the centre of Morbegno with 134 runners ready for leg 1 of the relay, with the main street was closed off for the event. The entire course of 4.2 miles with 1600ft of ascent was lined with 4000 screaming fanatical Italian and European mountain running fans. The Welsh team consisted of Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers), Ifan Richards (Meirionnydd RC) and Alun Vaughan (Eryri Harriers) and it was in this order that the Welsh took on the race.
After a race-long battle the Welsh lads finished a very impressive 15th out of the 134 teams, beating the Czechs, Finns, Danes and Portuguese, in a time of 01:41:12. Ifan ran his leg in 00:34:39 with a fantastic 9th place split time of 00:9:19 for the 1.2 mile 1600ft technical descent. A fantastic race and experience and a big eye opener as to how big and popular mountain running is in mainland Europe.

22/10/12. St Davids College, LLandudno. North Wales Cross-country league.
Another strong turnout for MRC at the Llandudno event. Glyn Griffin was first home for the club in 21st place, followed by Alex Lanz 25th, Dylan Jones 46th, Kevin Jones 49th, Jamie Evans 61st, Clive Edgington 65th, Alan Jones 72nd, Dave Whittey 83rd, Arfon Hughes 90th, Ricky Francis 105th, D Hughes 108th, Dave Seabourne 121st, A Steadman 147th, Dai Rice 152nd.
This gave Meirionnydd 267 points, 5th on the day but holding on to 2nd in the league with 438 points, behind Eryri with 213 and ahead of Deeside with 495.

22/10/12. Birmingham half-marathon.
Ricky Francis and Martin King took part in the 18,000 field at the Birmingham half-marathon. Ricky finished in a PB of 1hour 34mins 44secs, followed by Martin in 1hour 43mins 44secs, setting a club M40 record.

19/10/12. Treborth, Bangor. North Wales Cross-country league.
The club put in a fine team performance at the first league event of the season at Bangor. Ifan Richards came in 13th, Glyn Griffin 25th, Dave Parker 26th, Alex Lanz 28th, Kevin Jones 36th, Dylan Jones 43rd, Clive Edgington 58th, Alan Jones 71st, Jamie Evans 75th, Dave Whittey 80th, Ricky Francis 90th, Arfon Hughes 115th, A Steadman 136th and Dai Rice 137th.
This put Meirionnydd in 2nd place with 171 points, behind Eryri with 84 points and ahead of Telford with 233.

14/10/12. National Fell Running Relays.
An excellent day out in the sunshine at Church Stretton for the relays organised by Mercia Fell Runners.
In a world-class field the Meirionnydd senior team finished in 43rd position out of 151 finishers. Dave Parker ran a brilliant first solo leg to finish in 11th place, Kevin Jones and Mark Atherton then ran the pairs leg to finish in 53rd place, Arfon Hughes and Alan Jones then ran the navigation leg finishing in 86th place, Ifan Richards then ran the last solo leg to storm home in 13th place. The club over 50's team comprised Clive Edgington for the first solo leg, Kevin Evans and Dave Seabourne for the pairs, Dai Rice and John Smith for the navigation, and Dylan Evans for the final solo leg.
Many thanks to Ifan and Ess for providing the hospitality tent. Mercia's organisation was very impressive and we are now looking forward to next years event which is to be organised by Eryri and takes place in the Llanberis Pass.

7/10/12. Arenig Fawr fell race.
Less than 24hrs after racing the N. Wales XC league at Bangor, Dave Parker and Ifan Richards took to the fells for the Arenig race. The 7mile 2000ft race was the penultimate round of the N. Wales fell running champs so a good run was needed by both to stay in the top 2 places, with Ifan leading and Dave second, also Glyn Griffin third!!!!!! (Meirionnydd dominating the N. Wales fells!).
It was a good day for the race with no wind and a nice dry afternoon. Dave produced a storming run and a very strong ascent to claim a excellent third place in a time of 01:00:43 and cemented his place in the top 2 with only Rhobell Fawr as the final round of the series. Ifan started strongly and was 3rd to the summit but some serious nutritional issues quickly put a spanner in the works and he faded in the last 3.5 miles to crawl over the line in 37th. Dave and Ifan remain top 2 in the champs but not sure as of yet if Dave has overhauled Ifan. So exciting prospects for the Rhobell Fawr race, with Dave in a strong position to take the title and Ifan with it all to do!
As well as being the final round of the N. Wales champs Rhobell is also the final round of the WFRA Welsh champs and the Welsh Athletics mountain champs so should produce a quality field. All eyes will be on Dave and Ifan to see who will prevail, and also if Glyn can hold on to his 3rd spot. The N. Wales title will definitely be staying home in Meirionnydd, which will be great for the club.

30/09/12. Penmaenpool 10.
37 runners took part in Sundays race, with the weather fine at the start but getting wetter and windier as the race progressed. Overall winner was Dave Parker of MRC in an excellent time of 61mins 34 secs, second and third went to Aberystwyth AC runners Gethin Holland in 64mins 05secs and Ian Evans in 64mins 26secs.
The ladies race was won by Shelley Thomas 89mins 33secs with Anne Kelsaoo of Aldridge running club second in 91mins 20secs and Sian Jones third in 95mins 35secs.
The golden oldies of Meirionnydd performed excellently setting 3 new club course and 10mile records: Clive Edgington's time of 67mins 32secs was a new M55 record, Jeff Davies' 71mins 34secs was a new M60 record and Dai Rice's 86mins 26secs was a new M65 record. It was also good to see Bob Chilton back in action.

22/9/12. Home Countries International & UK athletics mountain champs.
A great day for Meirionnydd as two of our senior men runners, Ifan Richards and Glyn Griffin, making his well-deserved Welsh debut, were in action representing Wales in the Home Countries International mountain race & UK athletics mountain running champs.
The race started in the Cumbrian village of Melmerby and finished on the summit of Hartside Pass. A course of 6.2 mile up-hill only with 1700ft of ascent faced the 72 starters on the line.
The pace was frantic from the gun due to the high quality international field with the first mile on tarmac and track before hitting the open fells, with most of the climbing covered in the first 3.5 miles it was time to stretch the legs on the open ridge for the remaining 2.6 miles to the finish.
Ifan crossed the line in 25th overall in a time of 51mins 14secs and 5th welsh counter and Glyn was very close behind in 28th overall in a time of 52mins 07secs and 6th welsh counter out of the 7 man team.
Wales finished 3rd in the team placings.

14/09/12. Moel Wnion Fell race.
Abergwyngregyn was the venue for the final counter and the Welsh leg of the 2012 British fell running champs, incorporating the 7th round of the N.Wales fell running champs.
A real sea shore to summit type of race packed in 1800ft of vertical gain in the 4.5 miles. Conditions were tough as the heat again soared as a field of 102 lined up for the 2pm start.
Five Meirionnydd runners formed a team for the event as teams were counted in the British champs (5 to count). With a top quality field from all over the U.K. and N.Ireland the pace matched the weather, HOT!!
The race was won by 2011 British champion (and Aran record holder) Morgan Donnelly of Borrowdale Fell runners in a new course record time of 34mins 57secs.
First in for Meirionnydd was Ifan Richards claiming a excellent 11th place finish in 39mins 00secs. Dave Parker continued to impress and crossed in 18th in a time of 40mins 21secs, Glyn Griffin quickly followed with a very strong performance claiming 22nd place in 41mins 13secs. Alan Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog and Arfon Hughes completed the club turn out with strong runs to cross in respective times of 50mins 27secs and 56mins 07secs.
A great team showing in the British Champs.

07/09/12. Ras Moel Hebog.
Alan Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog took on the 4.5 mile 2500ft of Moel Hebog. Classed as one of the toughest short races on the Welsh fell calender it attracted a strong northern contingent from Calder Valley fell runners down for the weekend to recce Moel Wnion, next weekend's British Championships race and North wales series counter. The race was won by Karl Gray of Calder Valley (3rd at Cader 2011) in a time of 48mins 13secs Alan took the race by the scruff of the neck in his first outing on the race and despite a slight detour from the summit, put in a sterling performance to cross the line in a time of 73mins 51secs.

27/08/12. Ras y Mynydd fell race.
Alan Jones made the journey to Llandygai on the outskirts of Bangor for this sharp 4.5mile 700ft race last Wednesday. Continuing his form after a strong run at Race the Train Alan produced another excellent run to claim 4th in a time 33:27. Da Iawn Alan.

26/08/12. Ras y Cnicht.
After a wet week the weather cleared on bank holiday Sunday for the annual welsh classic Ras Y Cnicht at Croesor above Llanfrothen. Three Meirionnydd mountain goats turned up for the race and again, as we've seen over the past couple of weeks the Meirionnydd men have dominated proceedings. Taking the lead from the gun Ifan Richards summited the mountain's 2 mile 1850ft ascent in 25:34 and made light work of the descent in a impressive 11:03 to take overall victory in 36:37 and fastest time since 2007 and second fastest descent in the race history. Dave Parker powered his way to the summit in 2nd position and kept his position to the line with a solid run to take runner up spot in a time of 39:24. Local man Glyn Griffin from Llanfrothen put in yet another strong performance to take 6th in a time of 41:24 and was over the moon to have run a race that he has spectated for years but had never thought of running.

23/08/12. Ras Glyndwr.
A very successful first running of this race organised by Matt Ward (organiser of Trail Marathon Wales). After some heavy rain the course was very challenging underfoot, but didn't deter the 30 athletes that took on the 3.2mile course with 700ft ascent.
The race was won by Welsh international Andrew Davies of Mercia Fell Runners in a very fast time of 19mins 58secs which will be a tough course record to beat. Taking 2nd overall and first for Meirionnydd was Ifan Richards in a time of 21mins 40secs, completing the podium and taking 3rd was Glyn Griffin, the Meirionnydd man crossing in a time of 23mins 03secs.
The Meirionnydd machine kept rolling in with strong runs from Dave Whittey, 11th overall in 26mins 59secs and 2nd in the M50cat, followed by Arfon Hughes in 12th overall in 27mins 51secs and claiming victory in the M40 cat. 17th overall was Ricky Francis in 29mins 52secs closely followed by Graeme Stringer in his first race since his knee op' crossing in 30mins 06secs. Dave put in another sterling performance to finish 4th out of a 89 strong field, covering the 4.5 mile course with 950ft ascent in 27mins 30secs.

04/08/12. Y Garn fell race.
The 6th round of the WFRA N. Wales fell champs. Four Meirionnydd runners in the first 6, must be a record! A tough short up & down course race measuring in at 2.9 miles with a brutal 1,547ft of vertical gain in the 1.5 mile climb to the summit.
Taking the lead in the last quarter of the climb to the summit and storming to the finish for the win and the only runner to break the 30 minute barrier was Ifan Richards in a time of 29mins 41secs. He was followed in quickly by Glyn Griffin finishing 5th, improving his descending skills every race, crossing in 32mins 10secs. Hot on his heels was Mark Atherton in 6th position continuing his very strong season and claiming victory in the MV40 category in a time of 33mins 10secs.

02/08/12. Ras Hendre Wallog.
The annual Hendre Wallog race at Abergynolwyn was held on Thursday evening. The race attracted a healthy field. Measuring at 3 miles and 375ft of ascent it is a tough little race with the first hill at 200mtrs at 1:3 gradient to test the legs from the gun. It was left to the Meirionnydd duo of Ifan Richards & Dylan Jones to battle it out over the distance. Ifan pulled away at the half mile mark to take the win in a time of 16mins 24secs with Dylan claiming second in a time of 17mins 25secs.

Ifan swapped his beloved Meirionnydd vest for the Wesh vest last weekend to race in the inaugural running of this event. All the home countries were represented, Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, N.Ireland and guest elite athletes. The course of 10k trail running and 270mtrs of ascent promised to provide fast racing, and that's what the healthy crowd got. The race was won in a super fast time of 31:57 by English Int and GB athlete Steve Vernon pipping fellow English Int, GB athlete and 5 time Snowdon winner Andi Jones.
Andy Davies of Wales (Maldwyn Harriers) came in 7th in 33:09 and Ifan followed in 15th crossing in 36:44.

30/04/12. Yorkshire 3 Peaks.
Four hardy Meirionnydd athletes headed up to Yorkshire this weekend to take on the might of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, also known as The Marathon with Mountains. A very tough course that takes in 23.5 miles and 6000ft of ascent and the 3 highest peaks in the Yorkshire national park, Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.
The 3 fells make tough going but it's also the hard cross-country sections between them that catch many out. The day started as it meant to go on, very very windy with a headwind for at least 80% of the route. The previous days' heavy rain made very heavy going underfoot and the famous bog at the foot of Whernside claimed many a victim.
The race got underway with the traditional 3 shotgun blasts and a quality field of 1000 athletes including some Britains' top fell runners. Fresh from his Moelwyn win last weekend Ifan Richards crossed the line first for Meirionnydd, covering the course in 3:23:05 to claim an excellent 23rd position. Run of the day for Meirionnydd was from Glyn Griffin. Only taking up the sport last October, and in his first long-distance event, he powered his way round in a perfectly judged pace to claim 65th place in a time of 3:43:16. Kevin Jones was next in for Meirionnydd on his first outing for the event, he crossed the line in a good time of 4:22:29 in 270th position. Nich Bradley followed and completed the quartet to finish strongly in a time of 5:15:05 in 603rd.
A big well done to all four on their performances and for completing this gruelling event.
