21/6/11. World long-distance mountain running championships.
Here is Ifan's report on his international debut.
Hi, a report of the BEAST this weekend!!!!!!
I travelled to Slovenia to represent Wales (and Meirionnydd of course) in the World championships of long distance mountain running at the weekend. The host country was Slovenia with the race start in the Alpine town of Petrovo Brdo at 807mtrs above sea level. 500 athletes from all over the world (19 international teams) lined up for the 8am and 24 degrees temperature race start. The course from the start ascended for 11k to a summit height of 1753mtrs, with stunning views and temperatures increasing to 30 degrees. There was then a long steep descent of 12k down to 361mtrs which tested the legs and technical skills of the runners, and a fast descent of this downhill put an end to many a athlete's race as what followed is probably the most brutal uphill I have ever taken on.
At 23k in to the 38.5k course I had arrived at the foot of the climb which is named "The hour of truth!" This was it, I started my assault on this WALL. 6k of hell! in that 6k, the ascent took the athletes from 361mtrs above sea level to 1610mtrs! 1261mtrs of ascent in 4 miles and the "hour of truth " turned out to be a tad longer "hour and sixteen minutes of truth" in my case, but still didn't let it break me, as it did to many european, US and Australian athletes! The closest thing to it around here I can compare it to is the steepest part of Tyn y Groes climb but solidly for 4 miles and after 13 miles of ascending and descending more than the height of Snowdon!! I reached the summit in pretty good condition and was faced with a 11k descent to the finish, that was a sort of welcome sight as normally I can rip descents apart (after 5-6 miles of climbing) but not this time!! still a good strong descent of hardpack trails and switchback corners saw me to the finish, to amazing crowds and screaming local mountain running fanatics.
I finished the race in a time of 4hrs 13mins 8secs in 43rd position with 8,200ft and 38.5km covered. All in all an awesome experience and would strongly recomend anyone to try this race as it's truly a spectacularly tough course and the Slovenian locals are amazing.
